Utilizing wood planks which can be read as 3 dimensional map coordinates, or as aerial views of encroaching roadways. <image:title>Sculpture - Axial Bifurcation, 2015</image:title>
<image:caption>Axial Bifurcation, The (Not So ) Secret Life of Plants, Robeson Gallery, Rutgers University, Newark NJ 8' h x 7' l x 6"w We are of two minds, like creatures born with two heads, a phenomena referred to as axial bifurcation, we simultaneously treasure and trample the natural world. By focusing on this bifurcation of humanity and nature into two oppositional forces, I question how to sustain a functional dynamic between their competing needs, while ultimately longing for a means to unite them. Axial Bifurcation is a proposal for an installation project that utilizes wood plank structures which can be read as 3 dimensional map coordinates, or as aerial views of encroaching roadways. The asphalt shingles on these forms vie for territory on a constricted surface, limiting the space available for artificial turf grass and cyanotypes of branch imagery to spring from cracks, a simulacrum of nature in an urban landscape. In contrast to these geometric and linear elements, columnar forms of silk fabric with photograms, bisect the room while they hang from the ceiling. These symbolic sentinels are forest-like, using abstracted images made using natural tree and plant debris gathered locally. Ideally, the exposure to the sun’s UV light to capture the cyanotypes would happen onsite. These translucent, ghostly images are illuminated by the light in the room. The use of cyanotypes in my work, creates 2 dimensional images that serve as stand-ins for actual objects. It permits distance, allowing a filter of memory to influence the viewer.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Jewelry- Fluidity and Form - Cyan Structure</image:title>
<image:caption>Brooch, 2014, wood, cyanotype on silk, tinted plastic, nickel silver, sterling. From the series , "Fluidity and Form" (2010-2014), which uses photograms (objects placed directly on photosensitive material) and cyanotypes (transparencies placed on photosensitive material). The images are created to reference ideas of genderedness, and are also inspired by Man Ray's photograms. Incorporating the abstract use of objects such as pearls or wood shavings, diagrams, and text, in order to relate them to their male or female associations. This is further emphasized by placing the blue images in pink framing. An investigation into the nature of identity provided inspiration for the Fluidity and Form series. These works evoke dualities: male and female, anima and animus, yin and yang, stasis and change. The cyanotype images can be seen as fragments of memory, abstracted elements of a changing narrative that add up to a notion of self. They were captured on silk using UV light and water and are rendered in the classic blue color of this early photographic process. Like dermis over muscle, the tinted pink plastic both obscures and unifies the structure underlying it. Alternatively, these pink plastic forms can be read in relation to time. Are they becoming? Solidifying the ephemeral? Or reversing the process, dissolving, and disintegrating?    </image:caption>

Solidifying the ephemeral? Or reversing the process, dissolving, and disintegrating?  </image:caption>

<image:title>The Quick and the Deep - The Quick and The Deep</image:title>
<image:caption>Installation view, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, 2014, curated by Mary Birmingham. (Textiles, wood, pigmented cast plaster, artificial turf, steel fencing, acoustic ceiling tile, epoxy clay with pigment) The Quick and the Deep portrays habitat under the influence of rapid climate change, considered from global and personal perspectives. The work reflects the visceral responses people have when they experience the menace, power, and destruction of weather, as well as what it inspires in them; hunkering down versus pulling together, and denial versus action. Textiles, asphalt shingles and insulation are used to invoke a narrative of environmental collapse. These quotidian materials hold a subtext of the domestic realm; they connect what is familiar to what is uncertain, to moments of crisis, in order to recalibrate our relationship with the natural world.</image:caption>

<image:caption>2l" w x 22" h x 4"D, 2014 sponge, coral, copper, foam, cotton string, waxed cord, acrylic fabric, acoustic tile, wood. For the New Disasters- July, 2014 When all that remains are memories of objects, and a longing for the functions they provided, which are indistinct, like a barely sensed dream after an early morning waking. Pulled from the heaps, cobbled into things that feel essential, but whose purpose are hidden as much by waste as loss. Touch after touch hands know what they knew, making by instinct, differently familiar forms in search of their connection to human activity. These are now in time for the new disasters.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Thea Clark: Cryosphere So Blue A special installation in Velvet da Vinci’s Elevator space. 2015 Polk Street, San Francisco, CA 94109 http://www.velvetdavinci.com/2016/04/thea-clark-cryosphere-so-blue/ May 13 – 22, 2016 Artist’s Reception: Friday, May 13, 2016, 6-8pm   Velvet Da Vinci is pleased to present Thea Clark’s Cryosphere So Blue, a site-specific installation in the gallery’s two-story elevator shaft. The show will run May 11 – 22, 2016. An Artist’s Reception will take place Friday, May 13, 2016, from 6-8pm.   The term cryosphere refers to the frozen water on the earth’s surface. The installation is inspired by the work of pioneering female Arctic explorer Louise A. Boyd of San Rafael, California who in the 1930’s conducted numerous expeditions to Eastern Greenland to do research on glaciers and geography. Boyd’s work included documenting the landscapes with hundreds of photographs made using state of the art cameras. Her collective research from over 80 years ago is still used today as a reference point for climate change studies. Boyd’s black and white images capture amazing surface detail but we know the true glowing blues of icebergs and glaciers were only possible to see in person. Thea Clark’s sculpture and jewelry installation is influenced by these captured images, Boyd’s actual seen experience, documented scientific findings, and the nautical aspect of the exploration. Through the use of color, texture, and materials Clark pays homage to the natural wonder of the Arctic. Clark focuses on the pioneering spirit of Boyd through the lens of today’s knowledge of man’s responsibility for the rapid loss of our cryosphere.</image:caption>
