We are of two minds, like creatures born with two heads, a phenomena referred to as axial bifurcation, we simultaneously treasure and trample the natural world. By focusing on this bifurcation of humanity and nature into two oppositional forces, I question how to sustain a functional dynamic between their competing needs, while ultimately longing for a means to unite them.

Axial Bifurcation is a proposal for an installation project that utilizes wood plank structures which can be read as 3 dimensional map coordinates, or as aerial views of encroaching roadways. The asphalt shingles on these forms vie for territory on a constricted surface, limiting the space available for artificial turf grass and cyanotypes of branch imagery to spring from cracks, a simulacrum of nature in an urban landscape.

In contrast to these geometric and linear elements, columnar forms of silk fabric with photograms, bisect the room while they hang from the ceiling. These symbolic sentinels are forest-like,  using abstracted images  made using natural tree and plant debris gathered  locally. Ideally, the exposure to the sun’s UV light to capture the cyanotypes would happen onsite. These translucent, ghostly images are illuminated by the light in the room. The use of cyanotypes in my work, creates 2 dimensional images that serve as stand-ins for actual objects. It permits distance, allowing a filter of memory to influence the viewer.
